Whats an atoll full#
Malé, the capital of Maldives is known for its dense population, skyscrapers and paved roads where the streets are always bustling, noisy and full of life. An atoll is a ring of coral that originally grew completely around the shoreline of an island, and which continued to grow upward on top of itself as the island subsided or eroded away. The Main airport in the country, Velana International Airport, is also in Kaafu Atoll. Practically all the uninhabited islands in this region are now tourist resorts, or used for industrial purposes.

Located in the center of the atoll chain, Malé comprises 80 islands, 12 of which are inhabited. It is the largest and most well-known atoll in the Maldives, and is where the biggest economic and tourist population lies as well. Kaafu Atoll is where the capital of Maldives, Malé lies and consists of two separate atolls North Malé Atoll and South Malé Atoll. Atolls consist of ribbons of reef that may not always be circular but whose broad configuration is a closed shape up to dozens of kilometres across, enclosing a lagoon that may be approximately 50 metres (160 feet) deep or more.
